The Algorithm

The Get Equity Startup Festival 2022 branding is a masterclass in thoughtful, intentional design. Felix Ayoola, Ibrahim Otukoya, and Ameji, Tobiloba Tunbosun, and all other collaborators didn’t settle for standard visuals. They constructed this concept as a nod to the modular, ever-evolving nature of startups themselves.

By developing a custom typeface and using stylized illustrations of iconic Lagos landmarks, the design team created a narrative that is both localized and universally relatable.

What if Nigeria had joined the space race decades ago? Niyi Okeowo takes us on a journey through time with his visionary brand design for NASRDA. By reinterpreting the National Space Research and Development Agency, he imagines what it could have looked like if we advanced our technology from the 60's to today.

Drawing from modern design and the agency's evolution since 1999, Niyi’s project highlights how far Nigeria's space exploration could have progressed. From the sleek typography to the bold use of green, gold, and white, every detail reflects the dream of a Nigeria at the forefront of space innovation.

Nigerian Space Agency

David Oku, a Nigerian-Italian graphic artist, has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz for an exciting project called “Project Avarosa.” This partnership is not just about advanced design but also about promoting inclusivity, with the League of Legends team, SK Gaming, playing a central role.

David’s eye-catching design for the fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQA 300 4MATIC combines the worlds of esports and high-performance branding in a creative and bold way. His work pays tribute to the unique and diverse female and non-binary athletes who are part of SK Gaming, helping to break down barriers in the gaming industry.

L-M: What advice would you give to Nigerian creators looking to break into international collaborations and work with brands on a similar scale? 

David: To truly improve as an artist, I believe the key is consistent effort and dedication to your craft. While some people are naturally gifted, it’s how you develop and use that talent that sets you apart. Make it a habit to create every day, even if it’s just a small sketch or exploring a new technique. Constantly challenging yourself not only sharpens your skills but also keeps you motivated as you watch your progress over time. One of the biggest turning points in my journey was when people started recognising my work without needing to ask—it had developed its own voice, its own identity. That’s when I realised that being unique and authentic in your expression is what truly sets you apart. Don’t hesitate to reach out to others—whether it’s for collaboration or feedback. The worst you’ll hear is “no,” but even then, you’ll gain experience. Surrounding yourself with fellow artists and embracing failure as part of the learning process is essential for growth. Growth comes from pushing through those moments, learning, and evolving. 

L-M: What has been the most rewarding aspect of this collaboration for you as an artist?

David: The most rewarding part of this project was, without a doubt, the opportunity to first conduct a workshop with the Avarosa Team, inspiring them and helping shape their creative vision. Guiding them through the process of creating unique visuals and art was incredibly fulfilling. Then, taking their ideas and transforming them into reality by bringing this amazing car to life was the perfect culmination of that collaborative effort. Seeing those initial concepts evolve into something tangible and impactful was truly a highlight for me. 

L-M: What did you learn from combining art, technology, and gaming on this project? 

David: This project really taught me that there are always multiple angles from which you can approach a creative process, and often, things aren’t as straightforward as they seem. To create a cohesive design, you really need to think outside the box. For me, the illustration phase was the easier part—it flowed naturally. But when it came to applying the design to the car, the challenge was finding a way to create something visually appealing for the Avarosa team while also working with the car's existing form. Blending creativity with practicality in this way was a huge learning experience, reminding me how important adaptability is in design.

Project Avarosa

Abel Idume, a talented multidisciplinary designer with a focus on brand identity, 3D, motion, and type design, unveils his latest work: a branding project for DABA Skincare, a pioneering self-care brand tailored for men with melanin-rich skin. With a dedication to addressing the unique needs of Black men’s skin, DABA introduces its debut products, the Body Wash and Body Lotion, specifically crafted to combat dryness and ensure proper hydration.

For too long, men of color have been underserved in the skincare industry. DABA seeks to fill this gap by providing products designed with an intimate understanding of their skin needs, all while championing a message of self-worth and cultural pride.

Abel Idume’s branding work for DABA Skincare is a prime example of how design can move beyond aesthetics to embody and elevate cultural narratives. Through thoughtful, historically inspired design, Abel’s approach pays homage to African heritage while addressing the specific skincare needs of Black men—a group often overlooked in mainstream skincare markets.

Daba Skincare Branding

Tope Nkechi's latest project, RevitaLab, is a health diagnostics brand designed to empower patients to face their health concerns with confidence. From calming color palettes to approachable typography, Tope’s thoughtful design encourages people to “See Beyond” their fears and take proactive steps towards their well-being.

RevitaLab Branding

Obasola Akintola works as a brand designer and visual storyteller at Cowrywise. He designed symbols, badges, and icons for the House of Ga'a, a historical drama set in the 18th Century Oyo Empire. House of Ga'a is a film by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the story is all about betrayal, power and lust and is now streaming on Netflix. The story chronicles the rise and fall of the turbulent reign of Bashorun Ga'a, a ruthless kingmaker who ultimately faces downfall at the hands of his son.

Akinbinu Akintayo uses this piece to pay homage to one of the greatest athletes of our time—Serena Williams. This visual exploration, aptly titled "Becoming," employs grid design, layout, and typography.

Akinbinu draws the viewer in with his commanding use of color. Akintayo’s choice of vibrant yellow, a color often associated with energy and optimism, against a serene blue background reflects Serena’s undeniable presence on the court—strong, dynamic, and full of life.

But it is Akintayo’s skillful typographic exploration that truly sets this piece apart. The choice to make the typography part of the visual landscape rather than simply a caption elevates this work.

With this work, Akinbinu Akintayo reminds us that great design is not just about aesthetics but about capturing the spirit of a story. Through his artful use of color, typography, and layout, he tells a story that resonates deeply with those who know what it means to become more than they were yesterday.

Rebranding Shuttlers 

Moses Oyemade has imagined this visually compelling app, given it a befitting identity and has ensured that it meets real-world user needs that even muggles can relate with.

Moses continues, “Working on this project was such a rewarding experience! I dove deep into crypto and investing, I researched, analyzed user needs and market trends and designed an app that’s feature-rich, visually engaging, and easy to navigate. I also ventured into motion design to bring the graphics to life.”

Ameji is a multi-talented and multi-disciplinary designer, proficient in various areas, including graphic design, communication and content strategy, brand strategy, art direction, no-code design and development, and brand identity design.

This year’s identity is about honoring Afrobeats with visuals that capture its energy and cultural roots. Ameji worked alongside Tobiloba Tunbosun (Brand Asset Design), Vasto (Motion Design), Chisom Emeka (Creative Direction), and Ojonuyo Ameji (Project Management).

Ameji writes, “This wasn’t just about logos or color schemes; it was about crafting a narrative. The visual identity had to echo the show's core values of authenticity, inclusivity, and innovation, while serving as a beacon for the emerging stars. Every element we created, from the star-infused logo to the color palette, patterns and visual style were inspired by Nigerian culture and was designed to reflect the journey—of the artists, the music, and the show itself. Our mission was to not just brand the show, but to tell the story of Afrobeats in a modern, compelling way, connecting its powerful past with an exciting future.”

Ameji concludes, “This identity not only gave the show a strong visual presence but also elevated its storytelling potential. Setting up the the show to increase it's engagement across platforms and working with the client team to use the show to spark conversations about culture, music, and identity. The success of the identity extended beyond aesthetics—it fostered a sense of community and pride around Afrobeats, further positioning the show as a cultural movement rather than just a talent search.”
