The all too familiar Aunty Biola’s salon, with its iconic retro TV, style posters, and warm, inviting ambiance, feels like a relic of the 1980s and 90s, an era when salons were community hubs—places of transformation, gossip, laughter, and shared experience.

In Wale Adebisi’s photography series with Temy, aptly called “Aunty Biola’s Salon,” the artist transports us into the nostalgic, intimate setting of a classic Nigerian hair salon. Adebisi, who identifies as a Visual Sociologist, Photographer, and Artist, captures not just a physical space but an entire cultural memory.

“The choice to capture this everyday scene in black and white adds a timeless quality, elevating the nostalgic effect. The focus on details—like the hairstyle posters and retro TV—imbues the images with personality, grounding the setting in a specific time and place.”

Anyone who grew up in or around Nigerian salons especially in the South-west will be able to connect to this quintessential slice of Nigerian life. Temy and Wale Adebisi led the Creative Direction for this series. Follow the creators via @waleadebisiphotography, @justsaytemi.
