David James Udoh’s new typeface, Funky Waka, is as vibrant and expressive as the streets that inspired it. Born out of a love for the hand-painted signage and transit designs seen in Lagos and Mombasa, this stylized serif typeface captures the energy and spontaneity born in Nigeria.
David wanted the font to embody a sense of movement and playfulness, with bold letterforms that are dynamic yet grounded in tradition. The term "Waka," meaning "walk" translates to movement. Funky Waka is still a work in progress, but already is on the route to supporting a wide range of Sub-Saharan African languages. The typeface will eventually offer a variety of weights and styles to stretch across diverse visual contexts.
