For motion designer and art director Chizzy James, animation began with a childhood curiosity about the moving graphics he saw on television. Before learning professional software, he experimented with physical objects, trying to recreate the effects that fascinated him. That early interest eventually developed into a career spanning motion graphics, 3D animation, visual storytelling, and brand design. His work moves between commercial projects and self-directed experiments, often combining familiar subjects with unexpected movement, surreal environments, and atmospheric visuals. From animated brand identities to abstract digital compositions, Chizzy approaches motion as a means of communicating ideas, creating experiences, and exploring the possibilities of design beyond static images.

Chizzy's commercial and collaborative projects demonstrate how motion can become an essential part of a brand's visual identity. In Kees, an adventure branding project developed with designer Isaac Zara, he explored the relationship between a sun and a mountain, using their interaction to create a recognisable visual symbol. The project examines how a distinctive mark can communicate a brand's identity even without its name. His portfolio also includes contributions to Net Zero Network, an Australian organisation focused on climate change and sustainability, where the creative team developed a visual identity that introduced personality and approachability to a technical subject. Other collaborations include Batch: The Next Batch and Hedge & Alpha, projects that demonstrate his experience across visual identity, illustration, and motion design. Together, these works show how Chizzy uses animation to extend a brand's visual language rather than treating movement as an additional decorative element.

His independent projects reveal a more experimental side of his practice. In Be Brave, a personal motion branding project inspired by DixonBaxi's monograph of the same name, Chizzy explored ideas around creative courage, originality, and the importance of developing a distinctive perspective. He also created A Promise Kept, a self-directed project referencing the creative agency Landor. His personal animations frequently explore more introspective subjects, with works such as Solitude, Waiting for Godot, Sighs, Wishes & Hope, and My Inner Critic Has a Lot to Say drawing on feelings of uncertainty, ambition, and reflection. Other experiments combine motion with poetry, including an animation inspired by Liliana Kohann's Painting My Own Wings. Across these projects, Chizzy moves between 2D illustration, 3D environments, typography, and abstract animation, using different techniques to develop the mood and meaning of each piece.

Beyond producing animations, Chizzy is interested in how motion design can communicate information and make complex subjects easier to understand. In The Hook, he experimented with using animation to explain the importance of engaging introductions in writing and content creation, translating ideas about storytelling into an animated narrative. The project also became an opportunity to examine whether animation could serve as an effective educational tool. He has shared process breakdowns and creative reflections with other designers, including discussions about learning motion design from scratch and the value of developing fundamental skills rather than depending entirely on software plugins. His perspective emphasises the importance of maintaining creative control, understanding design principles, and using technical tools to support an idea rather than determine it.

Chizzy's approach to his craft continues to evolve through experimentation, professional collaboration, and personal reflection. His work has been featured in Behance's curated galleries across branding, illustration, and 3D motion, while his growing portfolio brings together commercial identities, animated narratives, and unconventional visual studies. In one of his earlier reflections, he observed that design can exist without animation, but animation cannot exist without design, explaining why he places importance on developing the visual direction of a project before introducing movement. It is a principle that connects his different interests, from building recognisable brands to interpreting poetry and exploring imagined environments. For Chizzy, motion design offers an opportunity to keep questioning how ideas can be represented, how stories can be communicated, and what becomes possible when images are given movement.
